OT + Behaviour Therapy Working Together – The Classroom of Life: Across Disciplines (FREE Webinar)

Presented by Tanya Curtis, Senior Behaviour Specialist & Special Guest

Free Online Presentation

If you’re supporting a child (or teen) and you’re thinking, “Is this behaviour… or is there a skills/sensory piece we’re missing?”, this webinar is for you – because everyday life is the real Classroom of Life, and skills build step-by-step (from 0cm to 30cm) across home, school, and community.

In this practical session, Behaviour Support and Occupational Therapy come together to explain what OT actually does, how sensory processing can show up as “behaviour”, and how progress really happens when we build foundations, solidify gains, and practise consistently across environments.

Workshop content and details

  • A clear, simple explanation of what OT is (therapy to support your occupation—everyday living)
  • How behaviour and OT overlap (skills, regulation, participation, and daily functioning)
  • Why progress is often step-by-step, not instant (and why that’s normal)
  • How sensory processing can sometimes be misread as “behaviour” (and what to look for)
  • How to set realistic expectations for therapy (what happens in sessions vs what must happen at home/school)

The “Classroom of Life”: why your body is always learning in real-world moments

Body Life Skills + the 30cm Ruler: understanding skill development from “0cm” to “30cm”

  • Why some people take 5cm steps, others need 1cm or 1mm steps
  • Why foundational steps matter (e.g., grip strength/dexterity before handwriting)

OT explained in plain language

  • OT = therapy for your occupation (home, school, community, play, work)
  • Common OT referral areas (fine motor, handwriting foundations, social participation, sensory processing)

Sensory processing and behaviour

  • Examples of how sensory needs can show up as aggression, impulsivity, throwing, absconding, or “non-compliance”
  • The difference between “won’t” and “can’t yet” (skills not yet developed)

How progress really happens

  • The “build + solidify” approach (why people fall back—and how to reduce the drop)
  • The “therapy triangle” (therapy + caregivers + environment)
  • Why practice and everyday integration changes everything (therapy is not a quick fix)

You’ll leave with simple, realistic next steps you can start using straight away, including:

  • How to identify the baseline skill level (and why acceptance matters)
  • How to support skill-building at home without trying to “do therapy perfectly”
  • How to create consistency across home/school so the skill can generalise
  • Parents and carers (especially if you’re new to therapy supports)
  • Educators and support staff
  • Allied health and support workers
  • Anyone supporting a child/teen/adult where behaviour and daily living skills are a challenge

Online via Zoom. Attendees will be sent a Zoom link via email before the event.

  • Date: Wednesday 14 October
  • Time: 7:00pm–8:00pm (AEST) QLD Time
